SERGE AIMÉ COULIBALY / ROKIA TRAORÉ / FELWINE SARR,
Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal
[HAU2]
For the creation of Kirina Serge Aimé Coulibaly drew on inspiration from his African background and his reflections on the world of today. The piece is named after a battle of the Mandinka people in the 12th Century, of great importance to Western Africa, but is neither a direct description of the historic events nor a performance by African artists about Africa, but a tale of Coulibaly’s contemporary globalised reality. It is about human beings on the move: Occurrences that trigger and control migrant flows and their influence on societies.
The seed for this piece was sown by the so-called European refugee crisis in 2015, Coulibaly was deeply touched by how inhumanly it was described and classified. Further inspiration came from Senegalese economist Felwine Sarr, who wrote a much debated long essay, “Afrotopia”, putting up a new image of Africa. Sarr delivered the libretto for Kirina. The contemporary arrangements of Mandika music were conducted by internationally acclaimed Malian musician Rokia Traoré.
