NADIA BEUGRÉ,
Côte d’Ivoire – German Premiere
[HAU2]
What lies beneath the red carpet rolled out in Africa and across the world for the mighty and powerful? In her piece the Ivorian choreographer Nadia Beugré views the world “from below” and takes the audience on a journey through images we not often want to see, and thus keep at arm’s-length.
“The red carpet” from the title, that of the stars in the limelight, is nothing but the modern incarnation of an old tradition: the sketching of a sacred path, isolated from Earth, allowing the ancient clergy to avoid any symbolic contact with the world beneath them. Tapis rouge strives to uncover what is hidden beneath this fabric. Influenced by encounters with women and children who sacrifice themselves in the mines of Burkina Faso, Nadia Beugré speaks through her dance about the brutality these generally invisible groups are subjected to.
